For the Love of Cafés

We’re probably all feeling the same way these days when it comes to cozy-ing up on the weekends and being shamelessly mellowed out. Something about the middle of January just does that to us, huh? Lately all we’ve been wanting to do is curl up at local cafés, kindle in hand, latte on the table, and just unwind. How divine to these spaces look? Makes you want to design a little corner/oasis right in your apartment, doesn’t it?

We’re hoping that this New England snow storm is just mild enough that we can still meet up in Boston, but wintery enough that we can wander out and search for a cozy café like these…

And if you’re looking for some local cozy love – check out these lovely cafés in the Hartford area & Brookline/Boston…

In Conn., Dom’s Coffee, J.Rene Coffee Roasters, Sarah’s Coffee House, Tisane & Hartford Baking Company

In Boston, Tatte, Pavement, Thinking Cup & Caffé Nero

Happy Weekend!

Hello, dearies — hope you all had a lovely week, and have an even lovelier couple of days ahead of you. We’re stunned that next week is Thanksgiving. How did that happen??? It feels like as we get older, time goes by so much quicker. Are any of you all feeling similarly?

This past week our small home town in CT experienced some devastating news about a young mother, a member of our graduating class, who suddenly passed. In combination of learning this, of the troubling news in Paris, as well as world-wide current events  — it’s definitely resulting in some self-reflection. This week we’re feeling especially grateful for our friends, family, and the wonderful community that we were raised in.

While we have mushy hearts this week, we also still have our care-free nature about us. We’ve rounded up our weekly links for you all, hope you enjoy, and we’ll see you on Monday 🙂

Summer 2015 Movies

While summer movies are’t always necessarily Oscar worthy, they are just what they need to be – entertaining, exiting, and a way to veg out in some comfy seats & air conditioning. We’ve seen a couple of the films below, and were very happy with what we saw — what movies are you looking forward to this summer?

6a0133f5caa026970b01bb08330ac6970d-800wi

01. Ex Machina
We both saw this a few weeks back and completely loved it. An artistic yet thrilling view of technology in a world not too dissimilar from our own, this movie will definitely have you thinking about it long after you leave the theater. I believe the term “so meta” is completely applicable here.

02. Spy
We saw Spy a few weekends back when we were all together in Boston, and let me tell you, there were some hilarious spots. We looked over at each other a couple times, with tears in our eyes from cracking up so hard. And as mentioned before, it was just what we expected and just what we needed.

03. Jurrasic World
Reg saw this last night and I’ll be seeing it soon – I mean, how can you not?! We re-watched Jurassic Park a few weeks ago and are pretty pumped to be back. Also, if you’re up for waiting until the credits, Christa’s dad worked on it (Doug Tubach), and he’s in the Visual Effects section somewhere 🙂

pitch-perfect-2

04. Pitch Perfect 2
This gloriously self deprecating flick has everything you want in a comedy sequel — it’s vulgar, blunt, and didn’t ruin your love of the first movie, yay!

love-and-mercy-poster-640x949-1

05. Love & Mercy
We had to throw one serious film in there, so your brain doesn’t become total mush! This biopic chronicles the rise and fall of one of music’s most iconic voices — Brian Wilson, front man of the Beach Boys. With two actors playing two different phases of Wilson’s life, it should be interesting to see how he’s portrayed in cinematic form.

And don’t forget about fun movie nights in the park! Most cities have them, and they’re always a blast! Hartford’s round up of movies starts this Friday and goes until Aug 21st, rotating Hartford Parks for the showings, while Boston has a whole list of spots to set up an evening picnic with friends!

Happy Weekend!

Today and tomorrow are 2 very specials days…today is National Donut Day, and tomorrow is Reg’s birthday! We get to spend the weekend together with our guys, good roomies and delicious food – aka the perfect birthday. We’re hoping to pop over to Harpoon for a brewery tour on Sat, have a fancy-pants seafood dinner that night, and enjoy another tasty brunch on Sunday morning. Cheers to that!

Man, the last couple of months have done a number on me. Back in the beginning of April, my landlord of 4 years told my 3 roommates and I that she had decided to put our home on the market. She needed to do it for personal reasons, and while we totally understood and wanted to help her, it was a lot of information to take on very quickly. We live in a big 5 bedroom house with an attic, basement, and storage galore. Needless to say we had some stuff accumulate over time.

She needed us out as quickly as possible, and almost immediately began to have open houses. After a couple of weeks of very intensive searching for a new place, we found a really nice space only a quarter mile away from where we already live. Right after we signed on and had accepted the change, our landlord decided to take the house off of the market. We had the option to stay, but after weighing out the pros and cons, decided that the move made the most sense for us. We’re downsizing for sure, but I’m actually a little excited about that. Our current place is almost too big — so many things accumulating in the nooks and crannies! Also, the new place has central air, can I get an amen to no more sweaty Boston summer sleepless nights?

The big move is happening this coming weekend, and while I’m sad to give up such a beautiful place that was my first home in a new city, I’m ready to make the new place ours.

Here’s hoping that this playlist helps to chill you all out, as it has for me! Click here for the list on Spotify.

Band Profile // Cheerleader

CHEERLEADER

Have you guys heard of Cheerleader? If not, it’s time you oughta. We may be a little biased because they’re some of our best friends, but for real, their sound is just what you want on a sunny day. Known for their hazy indie pop tunes, they’ve been landing them some serious internet play, and have recently been featured on some of our favorite sites like Refinery29’s New Music September Nylon Magazine’s Band Crush.

Joe (middle) & Chris (2nd to the left) went to high school with the two of us in CT, and were biffies with Christa’s boyfriend Curtis long before she and him even began dating. Over the years they’ve been in all sorts of bands, and now Cheerleader is really crushing it. These gents just keep doing what they love, and it’s paying off.

Based out of Philly, they’re currently touring the North East — so if you have a chance to see them, we highly recommend it! They’re heading to NYC & Boston at the end of the month, but you can check out the other tour dates and locations here. Also make sure to take a look at their recent adds to iTunes!

Labor Day Weekend Fun

With Labor Day right around the corner, we found it only fitting to fill your minds with some ideas on how to spend your weekend! We’re really looking forward for taking an extra day for ourselves while we embrace the remainder of the warm weather!

// 01. Backyard BBQ
An extra day off is music to our Mon-Friday-workin ears! If the weather is nice, round up those friends of yours and sit outside, light the grill and eats lots and lots of chips! Extra points if you can whip together a Pinterest worthy cocktail like above – cheers!

//02. Day Trippin’
The best part about living in New England is the easy access to wonderful places within driving distance. An extra day off can extend any weekend trip into something a little more! Check out the dunes on Block Island, explore the mansions in Newport, or head to the woods – you’ve got a whole extra day, use it!

//03. Bike Ride
Sometimes a quaint little bike ride is all you need to make your extra time off that much better. In Boston and CT we’re big fans of the Charles River and Farmington River Trail. Where you guys like to cycle around?

//04. Movie Day
With the weather as unpredictable as it is round these parts, we sort of always need a plan b. A movie day with delicious treats sounds like just the thing! Make yourself a little spread and just let yourself be shamelessly lazy!

//05. Picnic
Picnic in the park anyone? Don’t mind if I do! A chilled glass of white and a caprese sandwich with a book sounds like an extremely pleasant way to spend these final few weekends of warmth. Relax and live it up!

Hey all! Hope you’re all having lovely Fridays so far! Are your summer plans filling up as quickly as ours are? We got a lot coming up in the near future, so we’re taking this weekend to take it easy and enjoy this blissful weather. Hopefully you all get to do the same!

Boston Weekend Hang

RegBdayWeekend

As we mentioned before, it was Reg’s birthday on Friday, and I went to visit her in Boston on Saturday! It was a shorter trip than usual, but it was fantastic – we laid out by the Charles River and explored new (to me) places to eat and drink.

Saturday // Lunch // Flour
This fast paced bakery/sandwich shop was perfect for a quick stop before we went to lay out by the Charles River for the afternoon. Joanne Chang opened up this place in 2000, and with several locations around Boston, it’s quickly become one of Reg’s favorite stops. Some of our favorites are the bacon arugula and tomato sandwich, the Greek chopped salad, and the chicken and jicama sandwich. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, we recommend the hazelnut-almond dacquoise, the sticky buns, and some cornmeal-lime cookies.

Saturday // Dinner // Row 34

Oh goodness. This place nailed it. Lobster rolls, muscles, bluefish, burgers, onion rings, fries, and wine. Owned by the same company as Island Creek Oyster Bar which we’ve featured before, we basically left rolling out the front door (the extra side of fries and onion rings were pretty unnecessary), but we were very happy campers. I think we can all safely say we’d recommend all of the above items, but we also recommend making a reservation  as far in advance as you can – this place is new and popular.

Saturday // Drinks // Lucky’s

Since we had a late dinner Row 34, and it’s not in the easiest of locations to get to, Lucky’s was sort of picked out of convenience – but hit the spot! Quick line, no cover, cheap drinks, a descent crowd, and some excellent throwback songs. We met up with an old friend from our high school days and enjoyed a little 70s funk and 80s pop.

Sunday // Breakfast // Mei Mei

Since discovering this place only a month ago, Reg has gone back four times and introduced it to five new people – I think it’s safe to say she likes it there. The scallion pancake (or as we like to call ’em, scal-pals) sandwiches are a great alternative to your usual breakfast options. We HIGHLY recommend the Double Awesome – a poached egg with cheddar and fresh pesto, inside a folded scal-pal. Don’t forget to spread some of the soy aioli on it, and maybe (definitely) get it with bacon.

All in all we had a great time catching up with old and dear friends, while finding awesome new stops. If you’re in the Boston area, check ’em out!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday friends! I hope this cat picture gives you as much joy as it does for us! Although this weekend is supposed to be a little rainy, we’re planning on having some fun anyhow- HarpoonFest for Reg and Brimfield for Christa. Make sure to check out our Friday links & have a fab few days off! xo G&M
