Embracing Alone Time

After reading a recent post from Julia of Lemon Stripes about the importance of down time, we too thought it was a great topic to talk about. And with chillier weather comes semi hibernation mode (before turning into full hibernation mode), and while it might seem a little boring at first, taking time for yourself is super important. Here are our ways of taking time for ourselves…

01. Creating to-do lists
Oh I know, sooo relaxing right?! It might seem daunting at first, but 2 of my favorite feelings come after getting my life in order – 1. the gratifying feeling of getting organized and being in control of your situation & 2. the inspiration that comes from making plans and putting ideas on paper. Make separate lists so things don’t become too overwhelming. Think day-to-day todo, long term goals and aspirational projects. It will recharge your feeling of self.

02. Going to the movies alone
The feeling of total control over what you see, when and where you see it is a very under rated alone time activity. Sure you could pull up something good up on Netflix, but you should really think about treating yo self once in awhile to a good old fashioned movie date. Maybe even preceded or followed up with some dinner or ice cream ;).

03. Experimenting with a new hobby (even if you’re slightly embarrassed)
This is the time to take those risks! Even if you feel a little self conscious, we can almost guarantee that no one is watching or judging! Usually people are too wrapped up in their own insecurities to even notice. Give that hot-yoga class a try, sign up for a 5K, give a new art or craft a shot (jewelry making, painting, photography, music), try cooking or baking something you’ve never made before, whatever strikes your interest. It’s okay to feel challenged, it’ll make you feel that much more accomplished afterward.

04. Pamper yourself
This can be a little tough, because sometimes we feel like we may not deserve to spoil ourselves, but trust us, you do! You work hard, and it’s alright to do something small for yourself to make you feel your best. Don’t get all crazy and max out your credit card or anything — everything in moderation! If you’ve been saving and eyeing that pair of shoes for like two years, get the shoes! This can even be smaller things like getting your nails done, a fresh hair cut, an amazing smelling face-mask, whatever brings you into your element and makes you feel as wonderful as you are.

05. Quiet time
We all struggle with this one, and we’ve all heard it before — turn off the tv, phone, iPad, computer, any and everything with a screen. It’s so important for our personal well being to give ourselves at least an hour to get away from the technology and consumes our daily lives, and just chill, man. This may make us feel a little anxious at first, but that’s to be expected — you’re basically going through withdrawal. Unwind with a book or magazine, straighten up your apartment, use it as a time to decompress and do something just for yourself.

{Almost} Fall Beauty Trends

Guys, 2 days from now it will officially be fall! Now that things are cooling off a bit and our faces won’t be melting off, it’s a perfect time to get a little funky with fun trends in the beauty department. Some big things we’re loving at the moment  —sharp cat eyes, smudged smokey shadows, vampy lips, rose-y cheeks & puckers, minimal nail art, romantic updos, fringy bangs with piece-y ends, braids galore, and balayage highlights.

What’re you all feeling at the moment??

Happy Weekend!

Hello dearies — what’s everyone up to this weekend? Christa and I have been feeling pretty tangled in a million different webs these days, and can’t help but look forward to catching on up doing things that settle us back into ourselves. I personally would love to go to yoga and perhaps bake something, two things that always help me in feeling centered and grounded. Hope you all have beautiful weekends, see you on Monday!

cct // We as bloggers really know this is true about Instagram & photography in general, but it’s always nice to remind ourselves that there are some days that you can fake it, and some days that it’s ok that you can’t (let’s just live in the moment a little more, right?).

rkv // The upcoming sweater weather also calls for a new fall book list, yay!

cct // I’m traveling to California for 6 days in early October and encountering 2 extremes – blog hang out at the Ace Hotel, and hiking in Joshua Tree – so I am welcoming these tips & tricks on packing a suitcase well. Btw, I’m only taking a carry on rolling suitcase and a tote – eek!

rkv // Oh right, Halloween is also around the corner, and this is adorable

cct // I’m always interested in seeing how other bloggers do their hair! I’ve been eying a curling wand vs a clamping curling iron, and I think it’s time! Also the tip of adding a little pomade to your ends is genius.

rkv // Picnic season ain’t over, and I love this DIY

cct // Yeah girl, yeah – why perfect abs aren’t me

rkv // Emily Henderson’s home line from Target has finally been released, and it’s everything I dreamed it would be 🙂

So we’re sort of having mixed feelings right now about the upcoming change of the seasons. Here in New England, it’s been one of the hottest/sunniest weeks all summer, but the fact that it’s September is throwing us for a loop. We want to dress for fall, yet our attire needs to be able to handle these 94 degree days. We’ve realized that the best way around this is through our color choices and textures. Burgundy, black, and leather all scream fall, but the flowy silhouette and high-hems keep it summer-time cool.

Festive Fall Gathering

HolidayParty_1

Although the temps are in the 30’s, we’re not giving up on Fall quite yet. So gather some friends and have one last festive fall gathering! *Hint, hint — Friendsgiving anyone?

The way to really make this work is to invite a couple friends and have them all bring 1 or 2 easy items like cheese, nuts, fruit, wine, etc., provide them with some cute dishes and you’re good to go! Last month Reg hosted a BYOC party — you guessed it, a “bring your own cheese party.” This was especially adorable due to the cheese labels (see here, here, and here), which help so that you don’t get confused about which kind you’re eating (it happens a lot!). Snack away while chatting, or even watching a show or movie.

Our little gathering is brought to you by Trader Joe’s and the H&M home goods section… hah, jk — but really, we got most of the delicious treats and pretty glassware from our two favorite spots. We pooled together on some brie, a cheddar-parmesan blend (which, BTW, is heaven on the rosemary-raison crackers), cashews, sparkling cider, and some fresh fruit for a divine feast for fools.

This turned out to be a delightful way to spend a chilly November Sunday. It isn’t Thanksgiving just yet, so we’re holding out a little longer on cute fall aesthetics.

(Christmas is still pretty damn cute though…)

Hallelujah, it’s big chunky scarf season. Pretty much the greatest thing about a brisk day, is the fact that we can walk around with blankets draped around our necks. Cathy from Poor Little It Girl made this cozy look beyond adorable, with some metallic flats and tight black skinnies. We wish we could make the plaid-on-plaid work the way she did, but let’s be real, that’s no easy feat, so we went with a mossy solid pullover.

G&M will be reunited this Sunday to see Cheerleader (check out their band profile here), and we’re pretty pumped to meet up with a bunch of friends to cheer them on (ha, get it?). Christa will be visiting her brother at Roger Williams for family weekend, and Reg is going to be having a weekend of hostessing, with her old college from coming to visit on Saturday, and then Christa on Sunday and Monday. We’ll be wandering the streets of Boston on Monday, camera in hand – so hopefully we’ll have a post soon of our galavanting!

Honey Pot Hill Orchards

This past Saturday my galpals and I were full throttle New Englanders when we went apple picking at Honey Pot Hill Orchards. It was the last weekend that this farm would be open for picking, and basically a perfectly crisp and sunny fall day, so it was slight mayhem. So many children. So many squished apples under our feet. And so soo many times we were nearly hit by the hayrides (we apparently couldn’t tell the difference between walking paths and hayride paths).

I live with three other ladies, and we all love ourselves some apples, so we thought “yeah! Let’s get the big bag!” No. In retrospect, that was an overzealous decision on our end. We wound up having to swap who carried the bag every four minutes, with apples falling all over the ground, and eventually putting in the large Ann Taylor Loft shopping bag that we found in the car trunk. That bag is full, and now sitting on our kitchen floor because we have no where else to put it. Apparently I’m gonna have to make a lot more than the one muffin recipe I had planned out for this endeavor (I have this apple bacon brussels sprout guy in mind).

And then donuts happened. Oh my word did donuts happen. Probably the best donuts I’ve ever consumed. Pretty much just perfect in every way… warm, soft of the inside and crispy on the outside, with a cinnamon sugar coating. I shall dream of these donuts and tell stories of their wonderment.

Travel Diary // Lincoln, Middlebury & Bristol, Vermont

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Curtis and I went up to Lincoln, Vermont to visit my Aunt Wendy and cousin Nesta this past weekend, and it was just what we needed! We woke up to a super rainy Saturday but that didn’t hold us back. We got a delicious breakfast from the Bristol Bakery & Cafe, poked around town (got my first henna by the super talented Bridgette – she freehanded our designs!) and drove all around Lincoln, Middlebury & Bristol making stops along the way.

Our first stop was the newly built Woodchuck Cidery in Middlebury, which was so much fun! It had a small self guided tour, and then a quick and delicious tasting. You got to pick 4 samples off of their list, and we were pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed all of them! To be honest, none of us had really explored Woodchuck ciders before, but we definitely will now! We mixed and matched with each other, sips here and there – and ended up getting a very broad taste of their menu. * My favorite was the Pink, it tasted a bit like rosé!

We then stopped at a Danforth store which specializes in pewter, and they were having a pewter demonstration. It turns out, the Danforth pewter lineage goes back to Connecticut in the 1730’s!

This view was gorgeous! I bet it’s even better without the fog!

We got up early on Sunday, Nes made us delicious waffles and we started out on a hike! It didn’t quite go as planned, but we got to drive around a bit more checking out Sugar Bush & Warren, VT.

I would definitely recommend any New Englanders to take a weekend trip up this way. It is peaceful, beautiful and you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous views and friendly people!

Have any of you guys been to Lincoln, Bristol or Middlebury? How did you like it?

Cider Bourbon High Ball

gm_AppleCocktail_7

A little while back, the folks from the wedding planning site Lover.ly reached out to us about a feature cocktail that would be a festive option for a fall wedding! Considering we love making ourselves some pretty drinks (see here and here), we were game!

We put our noggins together and came up with something that combines three things we just can’t get enough of — bourbon, apple, and bubbles! Check out below for our recipe!

gm_AppleCocktail_1

You’ll be needing:
(serves one)

1/4 cup bourbon
1/2 cup apple cider
1/4 cup ginger ale
4 ice cubes
a few pieces of diced apple
a sprinkle of cinnamon & nutmeg for garnish

gm_AppleCocktail_3

To make:

01. In a mason jar or shaker, combine your ice cubes, bourbon, cider and ginger ale.

gm_AppleCocktail_6

02. Put the top on, and shake it like a polaroid picture, or salt shaker, or any other hip hop song lyric of your choosing.

gm_AppleCocktail_9

03. Strain into a glass and garnish with apples & spices!

Optional: for a little extra something special, twirl the rim of the glass in a little cinnamon sugar mixture!

Hope you guys are enjoying these crisp autumn days! If you end up trying this out, hashtag #gardeniasandmint, we’d love to see them! And make sure to check out other cocktail recipes on Lover.ly!
