I’ve been feeling pretty mellowed out these days. At work, on the train, putting on my makeup, cooking — all involve me listening to soft tunes and just overall taking it easy. I’ve always been into calming jives, but it seems a little elevated lately, and I’m rolling with it.

If you’ve been feeling similarly, then this playlist is for you. A combination of twang-y folk/indie guitar, and a little bit of synth-y sounds as well. Speaking  of which, did you guys know that Vanessa Carlton came out with an indie album last year? I just discovered it yesterday and can’t stop listening. You can check out one of her songs on my playlist as well.

Click here to give it a listen on spotify.

Embracing Alone Time

After reading a recent post from Julia of Lemon Stripes about the importance of down time, we too thought it was a great topic to talk about. And with chillier weather comes semi hibernation mode (before turning into full hibernation mode), and while it might seem a little boring at first, taking time for yourself is super important. Here are our ways of taking time for ourselves…

01. Creating to-do lists
Oh I know, sooo relaxing right?! It might seem daunting at first, but 2 of my favorite feelings come after getting my life in order – 1. the gratifying feeling of getting organized and being in control of your situation & 2. the inspiration that comes from making plans and putting ideas on paper. Make separate lists so things don’t become too overwhelming. Think day-to-day todo, long term goals and aspirational projects. It will recharge your feeling of self.

02. Going to the movies alone
The feeling of total control over what you see, when and where you see it is a very under rated alone time activity. Sure you could pull up something good up on Netflix, but you should really think about treating yo self once in awhile to a good old fashioned movie date. Maybe even preceded or followed up with some dinner or ice cream ;).

03. Experimenting with a new hobby (even if you’re slightly embarrassed)
This is the time to take those risks! Even if you feel a little self conscious, we can almost guarantee that no one is watching or judging! Usually people are too wrapped up in their own insecurities to even notice. Give that hot-yoga class a try, sign up for a 5K, give a new art or craft a shot (jewelry making, painting, photography, music), try cooking or baking something you’ve never made before, whatever strikes your interest. It’s okay to feel challenged, it’ll make you feel that much more accomplished afterward.

04. Pamper yourself
This can be a little tough, because sometimes we feel like we may not deserve to spoil ourselves, but trust us, you do! You work hard, and it’s alright to do something small for yourself to make you feel your best. Don’t get all crazy and max out your credit card or anything — everything in moderation! If you’ve been saving and eyeing that pair of shoes for like two years, get the shoes! This can even be smaller things like getting your nails done, a fresh hair cut, an amazing smelling face-mask, whatever brings you into your element and makes you feel as wonderful as you are.

05. Quiet time
We all struggle with this one, and we’ve all heard it before — turn off the tv, phone, iPad, computer, any and everything with a screen. It’s so important for our personal well being to give ourselves at least an hour to get away from the technology and consumes our daily lives, and just chill, man. This may make us feel a little anxious at first, but that’s to be expected — you’re basically going through withdrawal. Unwind with a book or magazine, straighten up your apartment, use it as a time to decompress and do something just for yourself.

Sweet Beats // May 2015

Man, the last couple of months have done a number on me. Back in the beginning of April, my landlord of 4 years told my 3 roommates and I that she had decided to put our home on the market. She needed to do it for personal reasons, and while we totally understood and wanted to help her, it was a lot of information to take on very quickly. We live in a big 5 bedroom house with an attic, basement, and storage galore. Needless to say we had some stuff accumulate over time.

She needed us out as quickly as possible, and almost immediately began to have open houses. After a couple of weeks of very intensive searching for a new place, we found a really nice space only a quarter mile away from where we already live. Right after we signed on and had accepted the change, our landlord decided to take the house off of the market. We had the option to stay, but after weighing out the pros and cons, decided that the move made the most sense for us. We’re downsizing for sure, but I’m actually a little excited about that. Our current place is almost too big — so many things accumulating in the nooks and crannies! Also, the new place has central air, can I get an amen to no more sweaty Boston summer sleepless nights?

The big move is happening this coming weekend, and while I’m sad to give up such a beautiful place that was my first home in a new city, I’m ready to make the new place ours.

Here’s hoping that this playlist helps to chill you all out, as it has for me! Click here for the list on Spotify.

// 01. Backyard BBQ
An extra day off is music to our Mon-Friday-workin ears! If the weather is nice, round up those friends of yours and sit outside, light the grill and eats lots and lots of chips! Extra points if you can whip together a Pinterest worthy cocktail like above – cheers!

//02. Day Trippin’
The best part about living in New England is the easy access to wonderful places within driving distance. An extra day off can extend any weekend trip into something a little more! Check out the dunes on Block Island, explore the mansions in Newport, or head to the woods – you’ve got a whole extra day, use it!

//03. Bike Ride
Sometimes a quaint little bike ride is all you need to make your extra time off that much better. In Boston and CT we’re big fans of the Charles River and Farmington River Trail. Where you guys like to cycle around?

//04. Movie Day
With the weather as unpredictable as it is round these parts, we sort of always need a plan b. A movie day with delicious treats sounds like just the thing! Make yourself a little spread and just let yourself be shamelessly lazy!

//05. Picnic
Picnic in the park anyone? Don’t mind if I do! A chilled glass of white and a caprese sandwich with a book sounds like an extremely pleasant way to spend these final few weekends of warmth. Relax and live it up!

Sweet Beats // July 2014

These next couple of weekends are going to involve a whole lot of lounging in the great outdoors. This coming Friday Christa and I are heading up her to family’s home in rural New Hampshire, and the following weekend we’ll be hanging with old friends on the beach in Old Lyme, CT. Sometimes when things are this relaxed, I just want some twangy bluesy folky goodness to accompany me.
