Happy Weekend

This week was certainly a doozy. Between dinners, holiday shopping, and wrapping up the craziness at work before vacation, we certainly have been keeping ourselves busy. But, there’s always time to surf the web for entertaining links! Hope you all have wonderful weekends, see you on Monday!

Espresso Peppermint Brownies

brownies

If there’s one weakness I have, it’s dense delicious fudgy brownies. And in case you didn’t know, Dec. 8th is National Brownie Day, so we decided to pay our tribute. This recipe is pretty much as simple as homemade brownies get, and most certainly a crowd pleaser.

For the brownies:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • eggs, lightly whisked
  • teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional)

For the topping:

  • 4 large candy canes

To make:

Preheat oven to 350 and set aside an 8×8 pan lined with parchment paper.

In a heat-safe bowl, combine 1 cup of your chocolate chips (save the rest to add to the batter), butter, and oil, and place over a small pot of boiling water.

Once fully melted and slightly cooled, combine in a stand (or hand) mixer with your sugars. Mix well, then add espresso, vanilla, and eggs. Add your flour and salt mixture and blend until just mixed. Fold in your chocolate chips.

Place in the oven for 30-35 minutes.

While baking, prepare your peppermint topping. *Warning, this part is loud*

Place your candy canes into a plastic baggie, removing the air, and adding into a second baggie. With a rolling pin or hammer, gently break your candy into pieces.

Once your brownies have five minutes left in the oven, remove and sprinkle on the candy. Place back in the oven and finish baking.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday, loves — how’d you guys hold up this week? The week after Thanksgiving can sometimes feel extra long, but this year it didn’t seem too bad. This year we’re trying to be a little more conscious of our holiday habits — actively trying to keep our nutrition and exercise in check, and budgeting ourselves so we don’t overspend. It can be a challenge at times, but it seems to be helping, because we’re feeling good! Are you guys doing anything differently this year to feel a little more balanced? Hope you guys have a great weekend — see you on Monday!

Loving Now // Burgundy Lips

We’ve been feeling awfully cooped up these days, and in ultra hibernation mode. While sitting on the couch with fuzzy socks and binge watching Nashville is all well and good, it can easily lead to feeling a little frumpy. Sometimes we gotta just force ourselves out of the house and onto the town. What’s a good way to push you into that? An edgy new beauty look.

Burgundy lips can be surprisingly versatile as far as style goes. Throw the color on with your leather (or faux) jacket and metallic earrings for a rocker look, a deep side part and waves for your inner 40s vixen, or try out a boho-etherial vibe with some braids or a felt hat. For you ladies with those big pouts out there, please do us a favor and give this velvety look a shot, so we can live vicariously through your show-stopping ways. This lip color positively screams dinner & drinks with the girls.

Sweet Beats // January 2015

january15

This winter has been doing some work on me in terms of my health. I’ve been trying to stick with that resolution to exercise regularly, but it seems like every time I get into a rhythm my body chooses to shut down and get the flu… and then I faint on a train. Did that actually happen? Yes. Luckily I didn’t fully lose consciousness, a kind samaritan gave me his seat, and I was already on my way to the doctor. So it was pretty much a best-case-scenario.

Anyways, this playlist will hopefully help us all out with the fitness routine, granted we’re all in good health! I’ve found these songs to have a pretty solid beat that’s ideal for zoning out to. You can get a good run on with Lion Babe, Blacroc is perfect for strength training, and stretching feels amazing while zoning out to M.I.A. Get out there and kill it, ladies.

If you can’t tell, this season we’re kind of very into neutrals — specifically greys and blacks.  It’s just so easy to match them, and when they’re all a great texture, you can look really pulled together. This little number is especially awesome, because it involves stretchy pants and sneakers — two staples for weekend daytime wear. And because these leggings are coated, with a quick change of the shoes you have your Saturday dinner outfit all ready to go. This wool-blend coat will keep you warm from the winter chill, and the beaded-tassel necklace keeps you on trend.

Happy Friday, friends! We thought we’d take a quick break from our Friday Links to present to you: Put a Scarf on it, Part Deux. I bought this dress for my birthday, and had so much fun in it I had to break it out again for our holiday party. The high-low hemline was flirty and festive, and paired with my red lipstick, I was ready to roll. As previously posted, we made our way around town in our fancy holiday outfits, scarves in tow. We’re New England girls, we just love our scarves…

*Btw, I just want to give a little shoutout to those Old Navy heels. I usually have issues with heels, and these are extremely comfortable and so affordable!

Plaid Dress (Willow & Clay, similar)

Put a Scarf on It, Part Une

Hey all, and welcome to our first official post of the new year! Hope you all had a splendid couple of days off, and feeling alive and ready to rock 2015’s world.

Two weekends back, Christa threw her annual holiday pot-luck, which we always make a dressy occasion (because, why not?). The day of, we were sort of on a roll. Somehow we had managed to get two post photo-shoots done, the house tidied, and meals started, all before 3:00. At this point we figured hey, we’re getting dressed up anyways, might as well get some outfit shots out of it!

And since no New England winter look is complete without a scarf, here is our tribute.

(By the way, I swear I smile more than this… I was just trying to channel my inner Tyra with my “smeyes.”)
